Traffic Bureau Captain
Responsibilities:
- Field operations, including uniformed personnel working traffic and parking, as well as Special Events.
- Administrative and support functions within the Department.
- Managing and directing the sections under his/her command towards the Department’s goals and objectives.
- Reports to the Chief of Police and acts as the appointing authority for personnel under his/her command.
Traffic Section
The Traffic Section Lieutenant directs:
- Motorcycle operations unit.
- Parking Enforcement unit.
- Commercial Enforcement.
- Crossing Guards.
- Evaluates traffic issues with other city personnel.
Crime Prevention – Media Relations
Lieutenant is responsible for:
- Neighborhood Watch and liaison with community.
- Press releases and departmental information.
- VIPs and Senior Volunteers.
- Site Plan reviews.
Scientific Services Section
The Lieutenant is responsible for:
- Managing departmental supplies, facilities and building projects.
- Property and Forensic Unit.
- IT infrastructure, computers and Alarm Unit.
- Custodians.
Communications Section
The Lieutenant is responsible for:
- Managing the communications section 24/7 with a staff of 12 communications operators.
- Dispatches all police and fire calls, and general city switchboard functions.
- Issues permits for Special Events including filming operations, etc.
Litigation & Documents Section
The Lieutenant is responsible for:
- Six records technicians to sort, compile, store and manage all criminal records, traffic citations, arrests, and criminal complaints generated by Department Personnel.
- Liaison for litigation and court requests for personnel records.
- Public Records requests.
- Reports crime and arrest statistics to the State and Federal Government.
Personnel & Training
The Lieutenant is responsible for:
- Recruitment and processing of applicants.
- Department’s duty manual, including legal updates, mandates, and case law.
- Coordinates with Sergeant and Officer on training issues, bulletins, and Department policies.
- Maintains training files for all personnel and administers range qualifications and shooting scenarios to sworn personnel.
Reserve Corps
- About 40 Fully trained auxiliary Police Officers, including technical reserves.
- Donate a minimum of two patrol shifts and a monthly meeting.
- Donated 6,887 hours valued at $296,698.69 in labor for 2005
